In the spirit of reciprocity, how can we both be supported by and support our local ecosystem? For this class, we will explore the concept of wildcrafting and offer some perspectives on how to do so sustainably and ethically in the bioregion of so-called southern Vermont. Detailed profiles of local native and non-native plants will guide us through the seasons as we learn about identification, medicinal properties, and best practices for harvesting.
Rune Esch is a current clinical intern in VCIH's student clinic. Rune putters around the outskirts of Brattleboro, VT with their dog, feeling more grounded here with each step spent seeking reciprocity in the woods. Their taste for herbal medicine grew in an unruly chamomile patch at a neighborhood farm in West Philadelphia, a curiosity gently tended by plant and human mentors alike. They are now learning to foster herbal community care and food sovereignty in this rural landscape on Abenaki land. Rune is especially excited to be present for queer and trans clients, folks in resistance work dealing with burnout, and anyone eager to build relationships with plants
